Fellowship Financial Support
Year 1:
- Fellowship stipend at a higher rate, consistent with other competitive Stanford VPGE fellowships for four quarters.
- Fellowship tuition at the 11-18 unit level or 8-10 unit level dependent on programmatic enrollment requirements (autumn, winter, spring), 3 units of tuition in summer.
Year 2:
- Fellowship stipend at a higher rate, consistent with other competitive Stanford VPGE fellowships for four quarters.
- Fellowship tuition at the 11-18 unit level or 8-10 unit level dependent on programmatic enrollment requirements (autumn, winter, spring), 3 units of tuition in summer.
Year 5:
- Fellowship stipend at the school minimum rate for four quarters.
- TGR (Terminal Graduate Registration) or graduation quarter tuition for all four quarters.
The degree program is responsible for the scholar’s financial support in other years of the committed funding period, or for ensuring that the scholar has funding from other sources.
Enrollment
Scholars must be enrolled to receive fellowship support; enrollment should be consistent with the requirements of the degree program. In the first two years of the fellowship, scholars must enroll in a minimum of 8 units during autumn, winter, and spring quarters. If a degree program requires enrollment at 11-18 units in the first two years, the fellowship will provide tuition at that level.
In the final year of the fellowship (student’s 5th year), scholars in TGR status enroll in the appropriate TGR course during all four quarters. The fellowship will provide tuition support at the TGR rate regardless of whether a scholar is in TGR status. The degree program is responsible for providing additional tuition if a scholar is not in TGR status.
Scholars must be enrolled during summer quarter. The fellowship will provide 3 units of tuition in summer quarter of the first two years, and TGR or graduation quarter tuition in the final year of the fellowship (student’s 5th year). If a degree program requires enrollment at more than 3 units during the summer, the program is responsible for providing additional tuition.
Progress to Degree
Fellowship funding is contingent upon continued satisfactory progress toward degree, including timely completion of coursework, degree requirements, and both degree and university milestones.
Leaves of Absence
Scholars on a leave of absence are not eligible to receive fellowship support during the quarters of leave. Policy related to Leaves of Absence is available in GAP 5.3.1, Leaves of Absence.
When a scholar receives programmatic approval for a leave of absence, they may request to place their fellowship on reserve. Up to eight quarters of fellowship may be placed on reserve for future use as long as the support can be used within the first five years of enrolled doctoral study.
Once the leave of absence request has been submitted and approved, it is the responsibility of the scholar and degree program to notify the Office of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies (gus_fellowships [at] lists [dot] stanford [dot] edu (gus_fellowships[at]lists[dot]stanford[dot]edu)) to confirm the first quarter of leave and the quarter in which the scholar plans to resume studies.
Fellowship Reserve Status (Deferral)
Scholars may request to place the fellowship on reserve for future use. Requests to place the fellowship on reserve are only granted in one-year increments. Requests will not be granted on a quarterly basis.
Up to two years of fellowship may be placed on reserve for future use as long as the support can be used within the first five years of enrolled doctoral study. Fellowships cannot be placed on reserve for use in year 6 or beyond.
Scholars must email the Office of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies (gus_fellowships [at] lists [dot] stanford [dot] edu (gus_fellowships[at]lists[dot]stanford[dot]edu)) prior to the start of the academic year with requests to place fellowships on reserve. Prior to doing so, they should notify their degree program and confirm financial support during the reserve period.
Unless a request to put the Dean’s Scholar Fellowship on reserve is approved, any interruptions in the use of the fellowship will result in the forfeiture of the affected quarter(s).
Additional Fellowships
Scholars are obligated to notify their degree program if they receive support from additional fellowships. Degree programs must then notify the Office of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies (gus_fellowships [at] lists [dot] stanford [dot] edu (gus_fellowships[at]lists[dot]stanford[dot]edu)) so that the fellowship can be reconfigured, if needed.
If a scholar also receives a multi-year nationally competitive fellowship (e.g., NSF, Hertz Foundation, NDSEG) or multi-year VPGE fellowship (e.g., SGF, CCSRE), the Dean’s Scholars Fellowship may be combined with the other award. Please see example configurations below for a newly admitted student in receipt of another fellowship.

The Dean’s Scholar Fellowship may also be combined with other external fellowships or funding (e.g., NIH Training Grants). Please contact the Office of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies (gus_fellowships [at] lists [dot] stanford [dot] edu (gus_fellowships[at]lists[dot]stanford[dot]edu)) for how to configure the combination of Dean’s Scholar Fellowships and other external fellowships or funding.
Supplemental Appointments or Employment
Scholars are eligible for a concurrent research or teaching assistantship appointment (Administrative Guide 10.2.1 Graduate Student Assistantships) up to a maximum of 25% with no additional hourly employment during the academic year, or 50% with no additional hourly employment in the summer.
Scholars may teach in fulfillment of a degree requirement while supported on fellowship (see Unpaid Teaching Experience for Fully Funded Students in GAP 7.3.1, Assistantships). A supplemental teaching assistantship is not required.
Scholars are eligible for concurrent hourly employment of up to 8 hours per week during the academic year or 16 hours per week in summer quarter (Administrative Guide 10.2.2 Graduate Student Hourly Employment); they may not also have a concurrent assistantship.
University policies apply to all fellows unless the degree program has a more restrictive policy.
Taxes
Fellowship stipends are subject to State and Federal taxes. Taxes will not be withheld from fellowship stipends for U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and international students who are residents for tax purposes. For international students who are non-residents for tax purposes (and from a country without a tax treaty), there is a 14% federal tax withholding from fellowship stipends. Tax resources are available from the Financial Aid Office, Mind Over Money, and Bechtel International Center.
