  • 2007 Classical historian Richard Saller, provost of the University of Chicago, is appointed the Vernon R. and Lysbeth Warren Anderson Dean. In 2010, he is named the inaugural Kleinheinz Family Professor of European Studies.
  • 2001 Sharon Long, professor of biological sciences, is appointed as the inaugural Vernon R. and Lysbeth Warren Anderson Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences.

  • 1988 Ewart Thomas, professor of psychology

  • 1956 Under the deanship of Philip Rhinelander, professor of philosophy, H&S attains national and international prominence.
  • 1952 Ray Faulkner, former chair of Art and Architecture and director of the Art Gallery and Museum
  • 1951 Douglas Whitaker, professor of biology, is named dean. A year later, he becomes Stanford’s first provost.
  • 1948 Clarence Faust, professor of English, is appointed the inaugural dean of H&S.
